Private Lessons

At one time in history, music lessons were enjoyed only by the privileged royalty. Throughout the 18th and early 19th centuries, most families were financially unable to purchase instruments, and visiting music masters taught children of the gentry and aristocracy.

It is our position at Harmony School that everyone should be able to study music! Until age 5 or 6, a less formal, non-performance music education is more preferable, as indicated in the chart to the right. Thereafter, the sky is the limit!

We welcome students of all backgrounds, from ages 5 to 95+, to pursue the life-long joy of music making. Weekly lessons provide tailored instruction and mentoring support from our accomplished faculty members. Music training does wonders for the development of mind, soul, and body, for the young and the young at heart. It may surprise you to know how many adults come through our doors each week! Students are given both informal and formal performance opportunities throughout the year. For best progress, instruments must be available for daily practice.

Piano Instruction includes note-reading, technique, artistry, and music theory in addition to a wide variety of practice pieces and performance repertoire. Students must have access to an acoustic piano or full-size keyboard (including a sustain pedal) for practice between lessons.
Guitar,  Weekly lessons develop strong musical skills; repertoire will vary and include Christian, classical, jazz, blues, folk, country, and rock styles. Occasional mini-recitals or jam session provide opportunities to share and make music with others.
Weekly lessons and occasional group classes make for solid progress in violin, viola, and cello. Various methods are used, tailored to each student’s needs. Instruments of appropriate size may be rented monthly for $15.
Voice Younger students focus on the joy of singing while learning basics of posture, breathing, and so on. As students mature, more discipline is expected, with vocal exercises and (UIL or similar) competitions included.
Percussion With our side-by-side drum kit and sound proofed room, you will be able to learn on an actual drum kit- all levels welcome!

Christmas recitals are usually held at area retirement homes or elsewhere in the community. Showcase Recitals are held monthly during the school year. Check the calendar for dates and times. Students are selected by their teachers to perform in monthly Showcase Recitals.

Piano students are encouraged to participate in National Piano Guild Auditions, held locally each spring. Music students may also be eligible to prepare an entry for music competitions designated by their schools, such as UIL, TAPPS, ASCI, and similar organizations.
